The town of Hanover was settled in 1649 as the westernmost portion of Scituate. It would incorporate as a separate town in 1727. In 1996, the Hanover Center Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes the town hall, library, and church, as well as the town’s first cemetery and the Stetson House.
